You may have heard the quote “diversity is about getting a foot in through the door, and inclusion is about having a seat at the table”. I've been thinking about where the quote came from, where we've got to now, and what it means in practice.
Like many now-famous quotes, it's travelled to new places and meant different things over time, but there's a lot to be learnt from its origin. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress; she famously said "if they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair."
